Leadership and Management for Social Work provides critically aware and research-based knowledge relating to the crucial areas of leadership and management practice for social work. It is designed to provide this as flexibly as possible, in order to meet a broad range of candidate and organisational needs.

Details

The Diploma, offered at Postgraduate (M) level, reflects eight standalone 20 credit modules, which can be combined to form the Diploma Award through four core modules and a selection of two choice modules.

Each focuses on differing aspects of management practice. However, each module also connects with all the other modules in reflecting the key management functions and occupational requirements for excellence in management.

These modules, which are academically accredited in their own right, are available to staff from varied disciplines and professional settings.

Candidates for the PG Diploma award undertake six modules, comprising of one manadatory module and 3 other core modules and a choice of two modules from a possible five. The resulting six-module sequence will form a 120 Credit Postgraduate (M level) Diploma in Leadership and Management for Social Work.

Candidates completing three modules, one of which includes Managing Diversity (mandatory module), can receive an interim award of Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership and Management for Social Work.

Fees and funding

Postgraduate Diploma: Part-time UK students £3,200 pa or £533.33 per module (except for Leading Learning for Effective Safeguarding module - £855.

Entry requirements

For Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership and Management for Social Work, an Honours degree or equivalent evidence of ability to study at postgraduate level plus evidence of social work qualification and holding a management or other leadership role in a social work setting.

Learning and teaching

Teaching for the Leadership and Management for Social Care will take place on campus at the University of Birmingham, with access to the University's library and web-based resources.

Assessment methods

These reflect face to face teaching which is characteristically interactive, guided learning and group tasks together with guided study.

Academic assessment is comprised of a written assignment per module (3000 words). This assignment specifically requires candidates to connect knowledge, values and critical analysis to their experiences of, leading and managing in the workplace.
