Learning and teaching

Within the Department of American and Canadian Studies, we provide a supportive and friendly environment for pursuing high quality postgraduate study. All research students contribute to the departmental research seminar - involving postgraduates, staff, and guest speakers from Britain and North America - and many contribute to the production of 49th Parallel, an electronic journal of American and Canadian Studies.

You’ll also become part of – and contribute to – the vibrant international community of the College of Arts and Law Graduate School, which offers dedicated research resources and a supportive working environment. Our team of academic and operational staff are on hand to offer support and advice to all postgraduate students within the College.

Employability

The University of Birmingham has been ranked 9th in the UK and 55th in the world, for post-qualification employability in a global survey of universities commissioned by the International Herald Tribune.

Graduates from the Department develop a range of skills including the ability to lead and participate in discussions and the ability to formulate and solve problems, which can be used in a variety of occupations. A snapshot of graduate destinations over a five-year period has identified a variety of career paths, from teaching and lecturing, advertising and marketing, to media production and project management.

Your degree will provide excellent preparation for employment and this will be further enhanced by the employability skills training offered through the College of Arts and Law Graduate School.
