Summary

This programme will equip you with research skills that will be helpful when working towards a career in clinical or other applied psychology fields, or in clinical research. It consists of two research placements plus a research dissertation and taught components that will feature psychological research in clinical settings.

Programme overview

This programme will equip you with research skills that will be helpful when working towards a career in clinical or other applied psychology fields, or in clinical research.

Programme content

The programme will consist of two research placements, supervised by staff affiliated to the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology programme or working in clinical areas, plus a research dissertation and taught components that will feature psychological research in clinical settings, including:

  • An introduction to practical, ethical and design issues
  • Audit and research for service planning
  • Questionnaire design
  • Qualitative research
  • Single case design
  • Writing a literature review 

Skills gained

The programme aims to provide you with understanding and experience of research methods and techniques appropriate for clinical and applied settings. You will gain skills in planning and conducting research and disseminating research outcomes. These will include:

  • Generating research questions
  • Designing projects which will answer those questions
  • Liaising with service users and professionals
  • Acting ethically, sensitively and professionally
  • Information handling
  • Data analysis
  • Critical evaluation

You will also gain transferable skills in teamwork and effective written and spoken communication, to facilitate entry into further research and/or clinical training in related disciplines.

This programme will equip you with research skills that will be helpful when working towards a career in clinical or other applied psychology fields, or in clinical research.

This programme is fully modular, and consists of 180 credits, where 10 credits equates to 100 hours of student effort.

Full-time students must complete the taught modules along with the two research placements, in the first two terms. The 60 credit project is completed in the third term and summer vacation.

The recommendation for part-time students is that the taught modules and the first placement is completed in the first year of study, and the second placement and research project in the second year of study.

  • Psychological Issues in Clinical Settings 2
  • Transferable Skills
  • Foundation/Psychological Issues
  • Optional Modules from Computer Use or Design and Analysis 1 (Basic Statistics)
  • Research Placement 1 and 2
  • Research Dissertation
