The European Union now comprises 27 nation-states with a population of more than 500 million, all living under common laws and sharing aspects of political rule. This degree explores theories and policies for the analysis of European integration, and their relevance in providing a perspective to evaluate current problems of European governance.
This degree offers students the opportunity to undertake intensive and specialised study of this exciting and increasingly significant regional project. Students will be able to work with field experts in European integration, security, political economy, protest movements and political parties. They also can take advantage of the Institute for German Studies, housed in the POLSIS Department, and they can join the week-long POLSIS study trip to Brussels in Spring term, offering an inside view of EU institutions and NATO headquarters.
Issues examined include:
-
The history and theory of European integration
-
EU institutions and political dynamics
-
European security, including Europe as a security actor on the world stage
-
Europe in the global economy
-
The European social model and political parties in Europe
-
The transformation and integration of Eastern and Central European states
