This degree is aimed at holders of at least an upper second-class Honours degree in engineering or similar interested in studying the management and control of operations from a technical standpoint. You might be just finishing your first degree, or perhaps already in your first role and looking to advance your career.

You will learn to how to analyse various systems, practices and procedures employed in the management of operations, design such systems from new, evaluate and report on their effectiveness and appropriateness and assess real organisations from a practical operations management perspective.

On completion, you will be skilled to work in positions in factory, logistics or general management within the industrial, commercial or service sectors.

We offer three modular programmes intended for those aspiring towards senior positions in:

Project Management (PM)
Operations Management (OM)
Engineering Management (EM)

We concentrate upon not only analytical subjects but also communication skills and teamwork. Semester 1 modules are taken by all students to develop a firm base of general knowledge and techniques for further specialised management study. Semester 2 sees students split into relevant modules for each programme; these modules are designed to provide students with a rounded view of management in the engineering and industrial sectors. The programme culminates in a 15 week dissertation project encompassing real industry or commercial study, which will be undertaken in the summer (in year 2 for part-time students).

Tuition fees

Tuition fees for 2013/2014 are as follows:

£5,130 for home/EU students
£16,770 for international students

Part-time programmes

Most part-time programmes run for two years and their fees are one half of the standard full-time programme fees. A small number of part-time programmes run for three years and in these cases the annual fees are one third of the total full-time cost. Contact us for further information.

UK student visa regulations mean that students classed as overseas for fees purposes may normally only register on a full-time basis.

Learning and teaching

Delivery of the taught modules is "block teaching" whereby 10 credit modules are delivered in one-week blocks and 20 credit modules over two weeks, allowing students to focus on and gain an in-depth knowledge of each subject and enabling each programme to be taken full-time (1 year) or part-time (2 years) as preferred. Rather than just teaching students by lectures, we help them to learn through a combination of guided study, investigations, projects and research, i.e. "enquiry-based learning".
