Clinical Neuropsychiatry MSc/PG Diploma/PG Certificate

Summary

This is an interdisciplinary programme for experienced professionals working with people with neuropsychiatric disorders associated with neurodegeneration, brain injury, and other neurological illness. It provides you with: the ability to investigate and treat neuropsychiatric disorders; the ability to critically appraise research in neuropsychiatry; and knowledge of philosophical, legal, ethical and policy related issues in neuropsychiatry.

Duration: MSc – 1 year full-time, 2 years part-time. Full-time – 2 afternoons per week and/or and some 3 day blocks. Part-time – 1 afternoon per week and/or some 3 day blocks.

Entry requirements

A good relevant degree and experience of working with the client group, or an appropriate professional qualification at sub-degree level and five years experience of working with the client group. The University accepts Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL). For further details see here.

Programme overview

This is an interdisciplinary programme for experienced professionals (principally doctors, neurologists, psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, clinical psychologists and psychologists intending to become clinical psychologists) working with people with neuropsychiatric disorders associated with neurodegeneration, brain injury, and other neurological illness. It provides you with:

  • The ability to investigate and treat neuropsychiatric disorders
  • The ability to appraise research in neuropsychiatry critically
  • Knowledge of philosophical, legal, ethical and policy related issues in neuropsychiatry

In the first year, part-time students attend for one afternoon per week for the first ten weeks and then two three-day blocks followed by one afternoon per week in the last ten weeks. In the second year there are four three-day blocks and one afternoon per week in the final ten weeks. Full-time students attend all of the sessions in one year.

Lectures are by subject specialists, NHS clinicians, service users and carers. Many of the lectures are from visiting experts who practice and/or research in their specific field. The course is academic in nature and studentsyou are expected to use the basic content as a springboard for further self-study. All programme presentations and materials are available on WebCT (the University’s on-line learning platform) for follow up after lectures.

Modules

A research day/seminar is offered each year. This seminar is open to 1st and 2nd year students and includes:

  • the opportunity for you to have your research proposals reviewed
  • a session on submitting proposals to ethics committee
  • further advice on qualitative and quantitative research

Assessment

Assessment on the Clinical Neuropsychiatry Masters course is via a variety of short answer exams, 1500 – 3000 word essays, case histories, analysing research papers and a dissertation.
