The aim of this module is to make students aware of the strengths and weaknesses of various methodologies currently utilised in health care research. The module will develop a broad overview of a number of philosophical perspectives that may impact on research. This includes development of 'knowledge' including consideration of patterns of knowing; conceptual development; theoretical development; theory and research and types of 'knowledge'. Philosophical critiques of qualitative and quantitative designs will be considered through exploration of positivist and interpretative origins of research. The cultural and ethical dimensions of research will also be examined from a philosophical perspective. This is an interactive module in which the students will participate in a range of teaching and learning approaches to help increase insight and understanding or approaches to research. This includes formal lectures; group discussion and input from self-directed reading on key topics.
