This module provides the background to materials selection for a given clinical situation. The ideal properties of dental materials are discussed; in particular; recently introduced materials. Methods of assessing these for the clinical situation are discussed. New devices and techniques are assessed; and demonstrations of their uses provided. These include novel methods for cavity preparation; for prevention and for shade taking. The use of ultrasonics and magnets in dentistry are discussed; as too is the role of molecular approaches to tissue repair and regeneration.
