As Psychology reaches out to tackle the big questions facing society today, skills and experience in Psychological Research are becoming more and more in demand. Our MSc in Psychological Research (with pathway) offers students an exciting course that offers flexibility to develop specific interests, whilst at the same time an excellent opportunity to develop the technical and transferable skills needed to succeed in a wide range of research-related jobs. Students can choose from three pathways:

  • Psychology, including child development, perception and cognition, language and communication
  • Brain Imaging and Cognitive Neuroscience
  • Cognitive Neuropsychology and Rehabilitation

Why study this course

We are one of the largest and most active psychology departments in Britain with an excellent reputation for teaching and research.

We were ranked 3rd in the Grade Point Average, placing us in the top three Psychology departments for research in the UK in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (2008), as well as gaining 23 out of 24 in the QAA Quality Assessment Review of teaching.

Our wide ranging research makes an impact by giving a greater understanding of the relationship between brain, mind and behaviour.

Modules

The course is comprised of taught modules, research placements in labs, and a research project to produce a dissertation. Modules for the MSc Psychological Research are grouped into three areas: Research, Content, and Skills.

Getting into research

  • Proposing Research (20 credits)
  • Research Project (60 credits)
  • Research Placement (30 credits)

Getting into Psychology

  • Current Research 1 and 2 (10 credits each)
  • Foundations (10 credits)

Honing your skills

  • Transferable Skills (10 credits)
  • Computer Use (10 credits)
  • Design and Analysis 1 (10 credits)
  • Design and Analysis 2 (10 credits)

Entry requirements

This course is aimed at students who will have obtained at least a good undergraduate degree (at least 2:1 or equivalent) in Psychology or related discipline and wish to extend their understanding of Psychology, to become better prepared for a quality employment situation, or to aim for a further degree.

Learning and teaching

Employability

A surprising range of careers are open to students graduating with an MSc in Psychological Research. Potential positions might involve health or education programme development or evaluation positions, or consumer product/services research and testing. Our students are excellent candidates for research related employment in both private and public sector organisations because this MSc develops key skills that are highly attractive to employers, namely analytical and statistical skills, as well as presentation and report writing skills.

This MSc is also excellent preparation for PhD study or other advanced degree positions.
