Length of course
The length of course you need depends on your existing IELTS score and on the score specified in the offer letter for your University of Birmingham degree.
What you will study
The emphasis of this course is on English language improvement in the four skill areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking through the use of business and management content materials, such as case studies, journal articles and business texts in both the written and spoken forms. You will be taught in small classes (the average size is 12) and will attend lectures given by speakers from the Business School.
On the BME you will:

Analyse and critically evaluate business case studies

Learn techniques to read and summarise business and management texts

Acquire strategies for speaking in seminars and small groups

Enhance your management and business vocabulary

Listen to business and management lectures and refine your notetaking strategies

Develop presentation skills

Learn library, referencing and research skills
-
Evaluate and use different sources of business data
-
Supplement grammar, where needed
-
Engage in individual and group tutorials
-
Work intensively in teams to fulfil set goals
Course assessment
To pass the BME you must achieve the appropriate mark or above in each assessed component of the course. This will vary depending on your course-length, but include all or some of the following: assessed case study, assessed essay, reflective task, oral presentation, feasibility report and final exams. You must also have at least 90% attendance.
Please note: failure to complete the BME Presessional course successfully will mean that you will not have fulfilled the conditions of your offer. The University will not be able to accept any other English language results after this point. Therefore, your offer to study at the University of Birmingham will be withdrawn for that academic year.
You may, however, wish to resubmit your application or defer your entry to the following academic year while you continue to improve your level of English to meet our language requirements. Alternatively, you may be eligible to apply for a 24-month programme after the BME.

To book a place on this course, you will need to pay a non-refundable deposit of £450. Once you arrive, you will need to pay the full balance of the course fee.

IELTS requirements
The minimum IELTS score you need for the BME course depends on the IELTS score required for your future degree at the University of Birmingham. You can find this score on your offer letter.
