First year module

Sampling theory; estimation and hypothesis testing; correlation and simple regression. Calculus review: differentiation; functions of several variables; constrained optimisation; review - Integration; exponential and logarithmic functions; matrices; mathematics of finance; mathematics by computer with Derive. Wordprocessing (Word), spreadsheets (Excel) and databases (Access) with MS Office.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to: apply and evaluate statistical methods of particular relevance to business resources; use a range of mathematical methods and appreciate their uses in both academic and applied contexts; recognise relevant quantitative methods in understanding business, management, financial and economic problems and relate the methods to other modules in the programme; make productive use of information technology (including word processing, spreadsheets and databases) in academic and business contexts.
