PGA logoAvailable from 2014. In response to International market demand, the Applied Golf Management Studies International (AGMSI) programme has been developed using the expertise of the collaborative partnership between the University of Birmingham and the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) of Great Britain and Ireland (PGA of GB&I). This unique relationship is aimed to produce highly qualified graduates who can develop the game of golf in their home country upon graduation. The programme sits alongside the internationally recognized Applied Golf Management Studies degree, and students are expected to study together to develop both their academic and golf performance.

This programme is designed to support the promotion of the game of golf in developing golf nations. Accordingly it is not available to students ordinarily resident in the European Economic Area (EEA) or from Australia, Canada, New Zealand or USA, for whom the University’s AGMS programme may be appropriate.

Please note:

  • Applicants for this programme do not need to have a category 1 handicap;
  • It is expected that after completion of the programme, students will seek to use their qualification to develop the game in their home country (rather than the UK)

The AGMSI programme has been designed specifically for students from developing overseas golf nations, and will provide them with the opportunity to study a similar programme to the existing Applied Golf Management Studies degree, but without having to achieve the required playing standard. Lectures will take place at The University of Birmingham and also at the nearby world famous Belfry golf resort (the spiritual home of the Ryder Cup and host of 4 Ryder Cup competitions – more than anywhere else in the world). The Belfry is also home of the PGA of GB&I Training Academy, with 3 golf courses, golf academy and driving range amongst its facilities. The PGA National Training Academy (known as the European Centre of Excellence) also boasts some of the best golf science facilities in the world.

The highly successful Applied Golf Management Studies degree, run in collaboration with the PGA, has been recruiting high quality and high profile students for the past 10 years. This development of that programme has been designed to allow International students from developing golf nations to study with the University of Birmingham and PGA for a degree that revolves around the management and development of the game.

First year

In year 1, students will explore the way that the sport has developed across the world, and will consider particular case studies. They will also look at the fundamental requirements of golf facility management and business development (including a residential fieldtrip).

Second year

In year 2, these skills will be further enhanced and applied through more applied modules, including operational procedures and facility requirements. Underpinning this, the internationalisation of the game will be explored in more detail. Again a field trip will be used to enhance knowledge and applied understanding.

Final year

The final year allows students to engage with a particular research topic/dissertation, and focus upon their applied area of interest in more detail. A closer engagement with theory and practice will also be evident within Event Management and the opportunity to engage with a final field trip.

Learning and teaching

Lectures will take place at the University of Birmingham and also at The Belfry, a world renowned golf facility close to the University.  Each year students will also participate in a short residential field trip to a large golf resort in the UK (such as Celtic Manor; Gleneagles; St Andrews; Wentworth or Woburn) giving them the opportunity  to contextualise the key theories from taught modules and put these into practice.

The teaching and learning focus is a key aspect of this programme, and students will have the opportunity of engaging with a diverse international student group, as well as the existing AGMS students.

Assessment methods

The programme is assessed through mixture of written assignments, examinations, reports and group & individual projects. Students will also have the opportunity to be formatively assessed with group and individual presentations, seminars and discussions, fieldwork reports, posters and case study scenarios.

Employability

It is expected that this programme will produce highly employable graduates with the key industry skills that can lead to employability on a global level. As an example, our current AGMS alumni are working at a high level within the golf industry across the world, and recent graduates are working in countries across the globe including places like:

  • Bahrain (Royal Golf Club & Awali Golf Club);
  • United Arab Emirates (Yas Links & Sharjah Golf Club);
  • China (Sands River & Mission Hills);
  • Egypt (Taba Heights & Stella Di Mare);
  • Oman (Almouj Golf Club)
  • Saudi Arabia (Safaa Golf Club)

With Golf entering the Oympics in 2016, the game is going to become a truly global sport, and needs appropriately qualified staff to support the development at all levels. This programme, with the reputation and global brand of the University and the PGA of GB&I University can provide these skills and qualifications through this programme.
