Celebrating Success Awards Ceremony 2012

Jeff Bale presenting an award recipient with his framed certificate.The Celebrating Success awards ceremony took place on Wednesday 7 March 2012 in the Murhead Tower. The ceremony was held to commemorate those students who had been awarded a number of prestigious and competitive scholarships and bursaries administered by the University and external donors.

Students in receipt of the scholarships and bursaries in question had shown outstanding levels of academic quality and performance.

Students were invited to a certificate presentation attended by Deputy Pro Vice Chancellor for Education Jeff Bale and Professor Donna Lee, the University Senior Tutor.

A guest speaker from BP was also present to talk about the work the company has put into sponsoring a number of awards at the University this year.

The ceremony gave the students an opportunity to then meet with fellow awardees and academic staff over food and refreshments in the Muirhead Tower foyer. 

RT Jones Prize 2011/12

Anoushka receiving her RT Jones Prize from Michael SheppardAnoushka Lester, a second year Biochemistry student, has been awarded the RT Jones Prize for 2011/12. Founded by the Guild of Graduates in recognition of the service of Mr R T Jones, permanent secretary to the Guild from 1936 to 1977, this prize is awarded to the first year student who is judged to be outstanding on the grounds of academic merit, personality and contribution to the life of the University and the community as a whole.

In addition to performing extremely well academically, achieving an average First Class mark for her first year, Anoushka is currently Social Action Officer of the Jewish Society and has also been elected as Biosciences Guild councillor for this year. Anoushka is an active supporter of her local community, organising and taking part in fund raising for the elderly Jewish community and launching a charity called GIFT which collects food for those in the community who need it. Anoushka also regularly visits Andrew Cohen House, a local old age home where she spends time with the residents.

Michael Sheppard, Anoushka Lester, Geoff Brown and Joe Biddlestone.The selection of the RT Jones prize winner was made independently by Joe Biddlestone, President of the Guild of Graduates and Alumni association and Dr Geoffrey Brown, Director of Graduate Studies within the College of Medical and Dental Sciences. The prize was presented by Provost and Vice Principal Professor Michael Sheppard on Thursday 15 March.

 

Student Development, Employment and Volunteering Awards Ceremony 2011

Jeff Bale presenting two awardees with their certificatesOn 17th June 2011 the Student Funding Office, Careers and Employability Centre and the Guild of Students held a joint awards ceremony to celebrate recipients of a number of scholarships and awards. The event took place in the Avon Room in University Centre and was organised by the Student Funding Office.

A range of awards were recognised including the Student Funding Office’s Student Development Scholarships, which provide financial support to enable students to undertake travel projects in the summer period that further academic and personal development. A guest presentation was provided by Christopher Jones, a former recipient who spoke of the project that the award allowed him to undertake.

The Careers and Employability Centre attended to congratulate those students in receipt of Honey Pot awards, which provide financial support to undergraduate students undertaking work experience over the summer vacation period.

Award recipients display their certificates.The joint awards ceremony also included the Student Employee of the Year Awards and Volunteering England Gold Awards, administered by the Guild of Students. The Student Employee of the Year Awards are national awards run by the National Association of Student Employment Services each year, with students nominated from Universities across the UK. The awards aim to recognise and promote the outstanding contributions of students who effectively combine part-time work with their study commitments.

Volunteering England Gold Awards are the only national student volunteering awards that recognise achievement, dedication and leadership within Further and Higher Education. The Gold Award is a prestigious mark of excellence in student volunteering.

Deputy Pro Vice Chancellor for Education Professor Jeff Bale was invited to present certificates and provide a congratulatory speech along with a number of other guest speakers from around the University. Cakes and refreshments were provided after the event in the Avon Room Coffee Lounge to give both staff and students a chance to meet and interact.
