Postgraduate Elite Scholarships in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences
The College of Engineering and Physical Sciences offer a number of fully-funded Postgraduate Elite Scholarships available to international (non-EU) applicants intending to undertake PhD research at the University.
Up to ten Scholarships are offered each year across all engineering and physical science disciplines. The scholarship will provide:
-
Full tuition fees at the overseas rate
-
A maintenance stipend se at standard research council rates
-
A single £5,000 research grant to cover research related costs (travel, conferences, books, computing equipment etc)
The Scholarships are awarded for a period of 3.5 years and are expected to begin in September of the first year of the award (but the start date is negotiable). Award holders will typically graduate at or near the top of their cohort in internationally leading universities. Many will hold national or international prizes for their work as undergraduates.
Applicants should apply to their respective school for a PhD by following the standard admissions process. The schools will then select the leading applicants for consideration by an external panel. The outcome will be released by the beginning of February each year and applications and paperwork will need to be submitted to each school by the end of December.
University Graduate School Doctoral Researcher Elite Scholarships
Please note that the DR Elite scholarships are now closed for applications for the 2013/2014 year.
The scholarships are available to outstanding overseas candidates of the highest academic aptitude holding an offer of a place to study on a PhD at the University of Birmingham starting in October 2013.
Candidates from the Colleges of Arts and Law, Life and Environmental Sciences, Medical and Dental Sciences, Engineering and Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences are eligible to be considered for these awards.
A successful applicant will typically be top of their cohort of undergraduate students. The applicant’s profile of marks will be exemplary (equivalent to high first class with no marks in the IIi equivalent category or below). The quality of the institution should be judged by world university rankings. Applicants could already have research published in international journals as a result of Masters level research for instance. Their references will attest to qualities of academic achievement or research potential that make the candidate stand out above their peers. They may have won prizes within their institution, or even international prizes.
The Scholarship is conditional on nominated candidates achieving a first class mark (or equivalent) in their final examinations before beginning their PhD at the University of Birmingham.
Potential candidates for the University Graduate School Doctoral Researcher Elite scholarships should be nominated by their School or College. If you are a candidate interested in being considered for these awards, please contact your supervisor to discuss the opportunity.
