The College of Social Sciences is composed of various schools and departments, each with a variety of awards that are offered to postgraduate students.
In addition to these awards, the University Graduate School have also recently launched the Doctoral Researcher Elite Scholarships. The Elite Scholarships are full fee and maintenance grant awards for high calibre overseas doctoral researchers coming to Birmingham to start their PhD study.
Birmingham Business School
The Business School offers a small number of scholarships in recognition of outstanding academic achievement that will provide financial support towards tuition fees. These
awards are based on merit and will be selected by a panel of representatives from the Business School; awards include:
School of Education
The School of Education at Birmingham offers a range of scholarships, bursaries and other support for new and current postgraduate students. For a full list of the awards available, visit the School of Education scholarships page.
School of Government and Society
Each year, the School of Government and Society offers a small number of bursaries on a competitive basis. These awards vary; they have usually been worth 50% of the fee payable, with the opportunity for renewal subject to satisfactory performance.
At the Centre for Russian and East European Studies (CREES), very strong academic candidates will be nominated for research council funding. Students can also apply through the general open scholarships competition managed directly by the councils.
The International Development Department will usually offer a number of departmental bursaries for student undertaking research degrees and on-campus taught Masters programmes
The Institute of Local Government Studies (INLOGOV) offers occasional Teaching Assistantships for those enrolled on a full-time research degree. These provide bursaries to cover living costs, payment of the fee and the opportunity to gain additional income through a limited amount of tutorial work. These awards are allocated on a competitive basis, and if you wish to be considered you are encouraged to contact the departmnt directly.
The Political Science and International Studies (POLSIS) department offers multiple bursaries for students entering taught postgraduate programmes (MA/Diploma). Bursaries of £3,000 each are available to overseas students, and bursaries of £1,000 each are available to home students (United Kingdom/European Union). Those wishing to be considered should indicate that on their POLSIS MA degree application by the advertised deadline.
School of Social Policy
Within the Institute of Applied Social Studies, home students studying for the MA in Social Work may be eligible for a bursary from the NHS Business Services Authority.
The Health Services Management Centre (HSMC) may be able to provide PhD scholarships offering assistance with tuition fees to the value of the home rate and maintenance at research council rates may be offered depending on funds available.
