This module provides an introduction to contemporary processes of structural change in the contemporary British and European economy, and how these influence the fortunes of cities and regions. It examines the spatial implications of underlying economic trends, and their impact upon public policy priorities. Topics include the debate about economic growth; de-industrialisation, modern service sectors and the "knowledge economy"; employment and labour markets; uneven regional development and the North-South divide; the urban-rural shift and the partial revival of city economies.
