The module applies ecological theory to the global threats to biodiversity, the likely consequences of biodiversity loss for ecosystem functioning, and habitat management and conservation decision-making processes. Major concepts discussed will include habitat fragmentation, the difficulties inherent in the conservation of small populations, and the establishment, design and management of protected areas. We use a number of case studies to examine ways in which management has been successfully implemented.
