Module description
This module explores the drivers behind local economic development with a particular focus on understanding the competitiveness of manufacturing firms located in high cost locations and the evolving geographies of business and professional services or producer services. The focus is on understanding the shift towards various forms of knowledge-led economic competitiveness with a focus on Europe, USA and also Asia Pacific. The aim is to develop an awareness and understanding of the debates over the transformation of industrial economies to knowledge intensive economies, and understanding of expertise-driven production systems. A central component of this course is to highlight differences between innovation and competitiveness in services and manufacturing and to introduce students to economic diversity.
