Module description

The module provides a foundational understanding of the principles and practice of hydrogeology. Topics covered include: introduction to groundwater, aquifers and the hydrologic cycle; groundwater flow; groundwater recharge; borehole design and use; regional groundwater flow; groundwater – surface-water interactions; aquifer transmissivity and storage; pump test analysis and an introduction to natural groundwater hydrochemistry. More quantitative aspects of the course are supported by problem-based practical sessions. Coursework comprises the student producing a short hydrogeological report of a specific locality that includes descriptive text, geological cross sections and maps and some basic calculations.
