Module description

The interpretation of geological maps is a fundamental skill in determining the geological history of an area, and its development in space and time. This module will gradually build up the skills required and will examine the diagnostic patterns created when rock geometries created by folding and faulting intersect the Earth’s topographic surface. In this way, the module will build an understanding of 3D geometry and the ability to visualise geological structures, leading in turn to an appreciation of how a volume of rock has developed in four dimensions over the course of geological time. Skills of this type underpin a wide range of professional skills, including the analysis of metalliferous ore bodies, coal seams and oil reservoirs.
