This module deals with the geological, chemical and biological processes taking place at the surface of the Earth. From basic chemical principles, this course will build your knowledge and skills to allow scientific interpretation of a range of modern and ancient environments. You will investigate the controls on mineral dissolution and precipitation, identify natural and pollutant water chemistry, and develop an understanding of the importance of microbial processes in the control of pH, redox and nutrient cycling. The course is suitable for all Earth and Environmental Scientists and requires no prior knowledge of chemistry (although some geological understanding is useful). The module is taught through lectures and interactive workshops and encourages social learning.
