It is impossible to read the news without hearing about diseases and conditions that threaten the human population, on the other hand the media is constantly telling us about the medical advances that are being made to address these medical problems. In this module you will get an overview of specific areas of modern molecular science that relate to some of these diseases and their solutions including Haematology, Immunology, Neurobiology and Pharmacology.
During the course you will develop and understanding of the blood system, it’s cellular and protein components and their roles. The brain is not well understood;, and this module encourages and understanding of neurobiology and the action of common neurotransmitters to help us understand the function of this complex organ. In addition we will consider how a number of drugs used in the treatment of various diseases actually work and how they might be improved. These include anaesthetics, antibacterial and antiviral agents, cancer chemotherapy and immunosuppression and CNS pharmacology.
The module includes lectures from staff in the School of Biosciences, the Division of Medicine and Pharmacology so you get a wide range of knowledge and experience. .Delivery is through lecturers, case histories, videos, poster presentations and practical.
