Module description

Term one begins by considering approaches to the study of Canada, popular myths and stereotypes, and an overview of Canadian history and geography. We then move on to Constructing Canada which consists of two units: Aboriginal Canada introduces the historical experience, contemporary realities and cultural expression of Canada's First Nations. the third unit focus on French Canada. We will consider the colony of New France, Quebecois claims for sovereignty in the twentieth century and Quebec's literary culture. [NB topics may change for 2012-13]

We will explore topics using a range of texts including historical documents, film and fiction.

Workshop style, including short lectures, seminar-style discussion, group work activities, online work.
