Module description

This module examines the experience of African-American from 1776-1945. The course begins with critical approaches to slavery, examining the impact of slavery on constructions of African-American Masculinity and femininity. Slave narratives are assessed in terms of their intent, techniques and impact. The course then looks at the lives of African-Americans between the Civil War and the Second World War, assessing their experience of re-construction and the emergence of various strategies to improve their civil rights.
