This module will introduce students to literature produced between 1780 and the present day. Lectures and seminars will focus on textual, contextual and theoretical issues representative of the changing literary culture of the period, under the thematic categories of 'Revolutionaries and Reactionaries', 'Memory and Mourning', 'Art and Morality', 'Literature and the New', and 'Changing Places'. Nominated texts used to illustrate these issues in lectures will be supported by the study of a range of related texts, chosen by individual tutors, in seminar discussion. The requirements for wider reading in primary and secondary materials will be reflected in formative written work and the examination rubric.
