This module will deepen your understanding of text structure and develop your knowledge of a variety of genres. In the sessions, we will study different written and spoken genres, including academic, business and media discourse and everyday conversation. You will learn to identify characteristics of different genres and to evaluate examples using theoretical models of text structure, grammatical and lexical patterning, register and style. You will develop your analytical skills by carrying out short analysis assignments as well as a large project, in which you analyse and critique a body of texts which you have identified as belonging to a genre, or to contrasting genres. You will also develop your presentation skills by taking part in a group presentation.
