This course provides an introduction to the theory and practice of text analysis through a critical investigation of a range of written and spoken genres. It aims to develop your understanding of how texts are constructed and to enhance your critical awareness of how the language of a text influences the reception of the message by the reader or listener. You will familiarise yourself with some relevant theories and methods of text analysis and gain practical experience in analysing texts arising from everyday situations. Text types dealt with in the module may include:
newspaper articles
advertisements
everyday conversations
workplace conversations
interviews
narratives
computer-mediated texts
