This module aims to introduce students to the impulses of Catholic reform between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. During Semester 1, after introducing the historiographical and narrative contexts of the subject, the module will concentrate on Catholicism in the sixteenth century. This period was one of multiple attacks on the Catholic Church, from the Catholic faithful as well as the growing evangelical movement. It was also a time, however, when the seeds of recovery were planted, most notably through the decrees of the Council of Trent (1545-1563) and the ministry of such groups as the Jesuits.
