This module examines the construction of sexuality, including measurable changes in sexual behaviour, changes in the regulation of sexuality and changing beliefs about sexuality in England during the period from 1750-2000. The course will be structured around five themes; law and regulation, desire and subjectivity, demographic factors, sexual identities, and the impact of reproduction on sexuality. The focus on these themes will enable students to engage with historiographical questions about the factors which create change and the timing of those changes, including the concept of the creation of a homosexual identity, the argument that the demands of fertility control provide the best explanation for Victorian sexual repression, questions about the impact of Freud and the interaction of gender and sexuality in early modern England. In seminars the students will be expected to engage with a range of historical sources.
