The overall educational aim of these linked modules is to provide students with knowledge and critical understanding of Britain's experience of the Second World War. Between 1939 and 1945 Britain mobilised for total war on an unprecedented scale. This 'people's war' placed British society and politics under severe strain and resulted in significant social and political change, the extent and consequences of which are still debated. This module analyses the response of the British 'Home Front' to the demands of total war, which will be gauged through the examination of four themes: British society; politics and strategy; personal experiences of war; and propaganda. A wide range of historical sources is used, including official and personal papers, memoirs, diaries, letters, newspapers and magazines, novels, documentary and feature films.
