An examination of the autocratic tradition inherited by Peter the Great and the consequences of that tradition for his rule; the religious and social structures of Muscovy-Russia; the conduct of Petrine military and foreign policy and their domestic impact. An examination of the treatment of Peter the Great’s legacy, in domestic and foreign policy, by his immediate successors; the problems of succession.
