The module is divided into three primary sections. Part One surveys the political history of Germany over the entire period with reference to its social and cultural context. Part Two analyses the particularly rapid and traumatic social changes and tensions in Wilhelmine and Weimar Germany, including issues of class, minorities, gender and city/countryside relations. Part Three deals with the cultural upheavals of the period, including intellectual responses to the condition of `modernity’, artistic movements, the development of mass media and consumption, questions of `Americanization’, and new attitudes towards the human body.
