Module description

The module introduces principal aspects of the civil archaeology of Roman Britain from the Claudian invasion down to the end of the second century AD. It examines major themes such as urbanisation, religion, cultural change and economic change through evidence such as towns, public and private buildings, villas, temples, burials and artefacts in the light of current theoretical perspectives.

In the second semester the module looks at the archaeology of Roman Britain in the third, fourth and earlier fifth centuries AD. It considers changes to major evidence types such as town, public and private buildings, villas, temples, burials and artefacts within the framework of current perspectives on the nature of Romano-British society, economy and religion in this period.
