Module description

This module focuses on a series of key archaeological discoveries from around the world, presented in their own historical contexts. The impact of such discoveries and the excitement caused by them in their own times will be discussed in the context of changing theoretical approaches to archaeological investigation and discovery. In this way, the module will provide an introduction to the history and development of the discipline of archaeology. In addition, students will also be provided with a broad chronology of changes that occurred in Britain from the Neolithic to the early Anglo-Saxon period through use of a series of key sites and projects. In the context of some discoveries, consideration will be given to the role of commercial archaeological projects and heritage issues linked to such discoveries.
