This module is the second half of the Greek core course, containing material central to an understanding of Greek literature, thought and culture. After a study of the poetic tradition from Archilochus to Pindar, and of the origins of philosophical writing in that period, it concentrates on the literature (other than drama) arising out of the 'intellectual revolution' of the later fifth century and the early fourth, examining individual authors and texts (eg Thucydides; Plato; Xenophon) in their relation to a shared but rapidly changing culture. Lectures will explore the historical background and key themes, and offer guidance in the reading of texts. In workshops students will study texts and develop interpretative strategies in more detail, using group discussion as a stimulus for ideas and a means of refining their understanding.
