You will compare Greece’s and Turkey's different evolutionary paths from a shared imperial past to separatism and the creation of competing nation states. We will survey historical forces such as nationalism, industrialisation and other forms of modernisation which contributed to the transformation of the Ottoman empire in the nineteenth century to become modern Greece and Turkey. We also consider the various forms which intervention by the Great Powers took and assess their attempts to control and influence the fate not just of the former Ottoman empire, but also of the successor states which emerged from it.
