Module description

The two linked modules provide an introduction to key aspects of Greek and Roman Classical Antiquity. The modules focus on themes and case studies associated with those themes. Students will look at a representative sample of primary materials. Semester I introduces key themes in Classical Greece, including for instance democracy, the role of women, Greek education. Case studies in Semester I include the Acropolis, Greek tragedy and comedy, and the beginnings of Greek historiography. In Semester I key themes include gender in ancient Rome, the rise of empire, the relationship between Greece and Rome. Case studies include Roman satire and society, Pompeii and Augustan monuments.
