Module description

This module examines the relationship between state and society in the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires focusing in particular on the city as a cultural and social as well as consumption and production environment. The module also examines the pattern of the state's military and diplomatic relations with Western powers over in the period spanning both imperial eras in order to understand how each state sought to assert and maintain its position in the international world order.
