You will assess how the medieval Byzantine Empire was transformed into the early modern Ottoman Empire. We examine the relationship between state and society in the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires focusing in particular on the city as a cultural and social environment. We also examine the pattern of the state's military and diplomatic relations with Western powers over the period spanning both imperial eras in order to understand how each state sought to assert and maintain its position in the international world order.
