This module will present an overview of the history of Egypt in the first millennium BC, a fascinating and still neglected era. The module begins with a general analysis of the political, ethnic and social developments that characterise the period, and considers in detail the major kinds of sources available and their interpretation. Within a chronological framework, historical developments, archaeological evidence and artistic output will be considered. Case studies of particular reigns, sites and issues (such as Herodotus' account of Egypt) are also included, as are the increasingly intensive contacts with the Mediterranean and Near Eastern worlds.
