Module description

This module contains material central to an understanding of Roman literature. It deals with the literature of the late republic, combining the study of individual authors with an emphasis upon the cultural developments taking place during this period. Set texts (in translation) include Cicero, In Defence of Caelius and On Duties; Catullus, Poems; Sallust, Catiline and/or Jugurtha; Lucretius, On the Nature of the Universe; Virgil, Eclogues. Lectures will explore the intellectual background and the key themes, as well as providing guidance in the reading of texts. Workshops will provide consolidation and more in-depth exploration of texts and opportunity to work on commentary skills.
