This course will provide an introduction to the production and reception of paintings, prints and sculptures produced during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the period that became known as the Industrial Revolution. We will be asking how artists represented, or chose to avoid representing, industrialisation and how patronage and artistic institutions were affected by widespread social and economic change. Some of the artists whose work will be considered with include: Hogarth, West, Reynolds, Zoffany, Flaxman, Blake, Constable, Wright of Derby and Turner.
