Focusing on Vienna at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, this linked module aims to relate the visual arts to other aspects of cultural production. Students will therefore study painting, sculpture, applied arts and architecture in relation to a series of social, cultural, psychological and literary issues (eg, the writing of Schnitzler, the music of Strauss and Beethhoven, the ideas of Freud and Weininger etc). Students will investigate aspects of philosophy, theatre, psychology, sexology and sociology in this period in relation to contemporaneous visual culture, especially the productions of the Vienna Secession artists, such as Klimt, and modern architects, such as Loos.
