Module description

The compositions of Mozart¿s Vienna decade (1781¿1791) have become iconic in Western culture, shaping our very notions of music, beauty and genius. This module provides an introduction to Mozart¿s style and compositional strategies in a variety of genres, mostly instrumental (symphony, keyboard concerto, string quartet, string quintet, etc.), but with an eye to opera buffa as well. The approach will be mainly analytical, with some discussion of Mozart¿s aesthetics and a critical evaluation of the reception of his music in the last 200 years.
