3. Cultural Content
You will further extend your knowledge of Hispanic cultures with further additional focus upon Spain. Authentic documents taken from the Spanish media with background material in English will be used to support the text book.
Geography: some more important cities in the Hispanic world.
History: important figures in the Spanish speaking world.
Social change: the family.
Work and leisure: employees’ rights, applying for a job. Pastimes and cinema.
Education: primary, secondary and further education.
Environmental issues: the problem of pollution, recycling.
Media: soap operas.
Travel: how to travel about Spain, “paradores”.
By the end of the module you should be able to:
deal with a limited number of unpredictable activities in listening, speaking, reading and writing
show understanding of spoken language in varied contexts
extract and apply information from a range of written sources
elicit and convey orally information in prepared and unprepared situations
obtain and communicate information in writing
display knowledge of cultural contexts and conventions appropriate to language use at this level

Teaching and learning methods

Practical language classes involving both whole-group and small group/pair work activities, with emphasis on communicative settings, use of visual aids and audio/video recording and the Internet. Language laboratories may be used where appropriate
