3. Cultural Content
Students will further develop their knowledge of a wider range of aspects of Spanish culture. Reading, listening and viewing material will be supplied in a wide variety of registers and styles, including press articles, conversations, radio broadcasts and video documentaries relevant to the topics covered.
Latin America: a brief introduction to the economic situation in some Latin American countries. Chile: the Pinochet affair and its repercussions.
Post-Franco Spain: democracy, freedom of speech, the right to strike, Spain and the European Union, the end of compulsory military service.
Spanish monarchy: the future king – Prince Philip.
Social change: population make up, immigration, racism.
Environmental issues: recent developments.
Health: exercise, keeping fit, dealing with stress, changing eating habits - the Mediterranean diet.
Spain today: present day Spain: into the new millennium.
By the end of the module you should be able to:
deal with unpredictable activities in listening, speaking, reading and writing
show understanding of complex spoken language in varied contexts
extract and apply information from a wide range of written sources
discuss detailed information, ideas and opinions
communicate effectively in writing
display knowledge of cultural contexts and conventions appropriate to language use at this level.
Practical language classes involving both whole-group and small group/pair work activities, with emphasis on communicative settings, use of visual aids and audio/video recording and the Internet. Language laboratories may be used where appropriate
