The module looks at the story-telling aspects of this first part of Dante's poem, at its spiritual message and dramatic presentation as well as at other religious and political themes. It examines the basis of Dante's structuring of Hell and his use of classical elements. The module also looks in detail at aspects of Dante's language and his poetic development.
