The module examines the development of the epic tradition in Castile with particular reference to the one complete extant epic text: the Cantar de Mio Cid. In addition to the study of the text qua literature, the course examines the historical context which gave rise to the Cantar; questions of literacy and orality and the nature of manuscript culture.
