Module description

This module focuses on three key issues animating recent Italian culture and cultural production: feminist thought; postmodern subjectivity and consumer society; immigrant communities. Although each topic raises specific questions, all three can be seen as resulting from the dismantling of logocentric grand narratives enabled by the post-structuralist and deconstructionist projects of the 1960s. The various theoretical, literary and film texts studied foreground and explore fragmented and marginalised voices. Lectures and seminar discussion will consider relevant theoretical reflections on subjectivity and identity, and analyse the dramatisation or illustration of theoretical concepts through cultural texts. Connections will be sought between the three sets of issues, which remain live and proactive in contemporary Italy.
