Module description

The module will explore the various ways in which German writers attempted to come to terms with the experience and aftermath of the First World War. Areas of discussion will include the literary qualities of German war writing, the presentation of life and death at the front, the depiction of broader aspects of the conflict, military and civilian perceptions of the war, as well as the political and cultural significance of German literature on the First World War in the period 1918-1933.
